FAQ about 3DS authentication through Payment links

What is 3DS Authentication?

3D Secure (3DS) authentication is an additional security layer for online credit and debit card transactions. It is designed to authenticate cardholders during an online purchase, reducing the likelihood of fraudulent charge back cases.

How does 3DS Authentication work?

When a cardholder uses their card to book with your property, the 3DS system prompts them to verify their identity, usually through a password, fingerprint, or a one-time passcode sent to their mobile device. This process ensures that the actual cardholder is making the purchase.

Is 3DS Authentication secure?

Yes, 3DS authentication provides an additional layer of security by requiring the cardholder to authenticate themselves at the time of purchase, making it more difficult for unauthorized users to make transactions. This also makes it impossible for a user to make a fraudulent chargeback request that can not be disputed.

Is 3DS Authentication available for all credit cards?

While many cards are compatible with 3DS, availability may depend on the card issuer and the payment network. It’s advisable to check with your bank or card provider for specific information. If a card is not able to be 3DS authenticated it will result in a declined error or something similar when charged.

How does 3DS authentication work and look like in Godo?

You can see if a card is 3DS authenticated in the charges and payment tab of the booking under Cards :

Here you can see two types of cards. The first one was added via the "add card" option and is not 3DS authenticated as seen by the NO in the 3DS section

The second card was added via Payment links, those cards are always 3DS authenticated unless you uncheck the "Use 3DS authentication" setting.

To make a payment link you click on "payment links" in the bottom right corner of the charges and payment tab. In the window that opens you put the email address of the guest in the e-mail line and click "Generate payment link"
Then you click send to send the link to the email address provided :

Once the guest fills out the card information and authenticates the card then it gets added to the "Cards" section in the charges and payments tab and you will see it as "Authenticated" :

We recommend using the payment link when charging cards from guests, as that is the only way for it to be authenticated.

Note : Virtual cards from Booking.com and Expedia, etc, do not need to be authenticated
